Environmental impact
The bridge crosses the Sewri mudflats, an Important Bird Area where flamingos feed. MMRDA did not accept the Bombay Natural History Society's request to shift the alignment, and instead used noise barriers, low-vibration drilling and warm, shielded lighting; officials reported that flamingos kept visiting during construction. Activists say the bird sanctuaries planned at nearby wetlands as part of the mitigation have not been set up.
About the project
The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone in December 2016 and inaugurated the bridge on 12 January 2024. It was built at a total cost of more than ₹17,840 crore.
