Environmental impact

The Daudhan reservoir submerges part of the Panna Tiger Reserve: the National Water Development Agency puts it at about 41 sq km, while independent studies estimate more. Official documents in 2017 estimated about 18 lakh trees would be felled or affected. Wildlife experts warn of harm to tigers, gharials and vultures downstream. About 1,913 families in 10 villages are to be rehabilitated, and cases are pending before the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court.

About the project

Approved by the Union Government in December 2021 at ₹44,605 crore (2020-21 prices), with central support of ₹39,317 crore. The Daudhan dam contract was awarded on 28 November 2024 and the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on 25 December 2024. Spending reached ₹11,379.74 crore by 31 July 2025. The project is due by March 2030. The reservoir lies partly in the Panna Tiger Reserve; the rehabilitation plan covers about 1,913 families in 10 villages, and cases are pending before the National Green Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
