Why it is delayed
Environmental impact
In 2022 the Bombay High Court allowed about 22,000 mangrove trees to be cut for the corridor (about 13.4 hectares of mangrove land affected), with replanting at a 1:5 ratio. In August 2026 it allowed 847 more mangroves to be cut for a power line feeding the corridor in Palghar, but said replanting hundreds of kilometres away (in Solapur) does not restore the local ecology, and that it will not permit such distant compensation in future.
About the project
Built with Japanese technology and loans from JICA. The 2015 JICA feasibility report expected completion in 2023. In March 2023 the Government told the Rajya Sabha that land acquisition in Maharashtra had been delayed, which delayed contracts, and that COVID-19 had also slowed the work. In July 2025 the Railway Minister said the Gujarat section (Vapi–Sabarmati) was planned for December 2027 and the full line for December 2029. MoSPI's monthly monitoring for June 2026 reported 61% physical progress and about ₹90,966 crore spent. Targets announced only as a month or a year are shown as the last day of that month or year.
