Environmental impact

The reservoir submerges about 276 villages in Andhra Pradesh by government estimates, plus villages in Odisha and Chhattisgarh, displacing many families, a majority of them Koya and Konda Reddi tribal people. It also submerges parts of the Papikonda National Park. The Union environment ministry approved diverting 3,731 hectares of forest land for the project in July 2010.

About the project

Earlier completion dates were missed. In 2024 the Union Government gave in-principle approval to release ₹12,157 crore to finish the work. In June 2025 the State's irrigation minister said the head works were about 80% done. The scheduled completion is December 2027; the Chief Minister has asked for it by March 2027. Targets announced only as a month or a year are shown as the last day of that month or year.
