Air pollution is one of India's biggest public-health problems. Under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), the Centre set a target of a 40% cut in particulate matter (PM10) by 2026 in the cities covered, compared with 2017-18 levels. Independent progress reviews found mixed results: many cities improved, some got worse.

Common sources

Vehicles, road and construction dust, industry, burning of waste and crop residue, and household fuel.

Questions to discuss

  • Which source should your city tackle first?
  • Should cities publish real-time progress against their targets?
