Untreated sewage, industrial effluent, garbage and religious offerings pollute many of India's rivers.

What the data says

  • The Central Pollution Control Board's 2025 assessment found 296 polluted river stretches on 271 rivers in 32 States and UTs, down from 351 in 2018. Maharashtra had the most (54), followed by Kerala (31).
  • The Namami Gange programme for the Ganga had ₹20,000 crore in its first phase (to March 2021) and ₹22,500 crore more until March 2026.

Questions to discuss

  • Where should money go first: sewage treatment plants, sewer connections, or running the plants properly?
  • What should citizens change in their own habits?

Linked solutions: a dedicated budget, and river etiquette for everyone.
