Potholes damage vehicles, slow traffic and cause deaths. According to road-accident data reported to Parliament and in the press, pothole-related crashes killed over 5,600 people in India between 2018 and 2020. Reporting based on later data shows the toll rising through 2024.

What people want to know

  • Which agency is responsible for a given road: the municipality, the state PWD, or the national highway authority?
  • Was the road recently built or repaired, by which contractor, and is it still under a defect-liability period?

Ideas

  • Public contractor details and guarantee periods on every road project.
  • Time-bound repair after a complaint, with photo proof.
  • Penalties for poor-quality work.

Raise a pothole in your area as a local issue with a photo, and link it here.
