Should India return to traditional healthy eating habits?
realMudda (starter topic)· 10 hours ago
Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are a growing worry, and many people blame processed and fast food. Traditional diets built around millets, pulses, seasonal vegetables and home cooking are often suggested as the answer. India proposed, and the United Nations declared, 2023 the International Year of Millets.
Arguments for
- Traditional regional diets are often high in fibre and less processed.
- Millets need less water and suit India's climate.
- Food culture is part of heritage worth preserving.
Arguments against or cautions
- "Traditional" diets varied widely, and some were nutritionally poor because of poverty.
- Busy urban lives and food prices make change hard. Lectures don't fix affordability.
- Choice matters. Promotion should not become moral policing of what people eat.
Questions to discuss
- What would actually help: school meals, labelling, prices, or awareness?
- Which traditional foods from your region deserve a comeback?
