Complex rules, frequent changes and paperwork make taxes hard for ordinary people and small businesses. One recent step: the GST Council's 56th meeting (3 September 2025) moved most goods and services to two main GST rates, 5% and 18%, with a 40% rate for a few "sin" and luxury goods, effective 22 September 2025.
Ideas people suggest
- Fewer exemptions and lower, flatter rates.
- Pre-filled returns and plain-language notices.
- Faster refunds and a simple dispute process.
- Easier compliance for small traders.
Questions to discuss
- What is the most confusing part of taxes for you?
- What one change would help most?
