Three-language policy: should Hindi be promoted in non-Hindi states such as Tamil Nadu?

Sensitive topic: please argue respectfully. Extra moderation applies.

The National Education Policy 2020 recommends that students learn three languages, at least two of them native to India, with states choosing which ones. Tamil Nadu has followed a two-language policy (Tamil and English) since 1968 and sees the three-language formula as a route to imposing Hindi. In 2025 the dispute grew into a disagreement over central education funds.

Arguments for promoting Hindi (or a third language)

  • A common link language can help people work, study and travel across states.
  • Learning more Indian languages strengthens national integration.
  • Children learn languages easily, so an extra language is a lifelong asset.

Arguments against

  • States should decide their own school languages. Imposition breeds resentment.
  • English already works as a link language, and an extra compulsory language burdens students.
  • Resources may be better spent on teaching quality in the existing languages.

A middle path some suggest

The third language could be any Indian language a student chooses, not necessarily Hindi.

Please argue respectfully. This topic touches language and regional identity.
