Vulgar language and cuss words in public life: should India push back, and how?

India in Nutshell (starter topic)· 4 hours ago

Abusive language in films, web series, social media, political speeches and everyday conversation is a frequent complaint. Some people see it as a decline in public culture. Others see it as ordinary speech that should not be policed.

Arguments for pushing back

  • Normalised abuse, especially gendered slurs, makes public spaces hostile, particularly for women and children.
  • Public figures set the tone. Civil language from leaders and celebrities would raise the standard for everyone.
  • Platforms could label or limit gratuitous abuse without banning anything.

Arguments against

  • Language changes over time, and what counts as "vulgar" differs across regions and communities.
  • Policing words can slide into censorship and be used selectively against critics.
  • Education and example work better than rules.

Questions to discuss

  • What would actually help: awareness, school lessons, platform labels, or laws?
  • Where is the line between strong criticism and abuse?
